Dear Friends and Family, we want to provide a minimalist childhood for Elliott, so we ask that, in general, you refrain from gift-giving. However, since many of you express the desire to gift something, so you can be part of Elliott’s childhood in some small way, even at a distance, we compiled this registry to both give you off-the-shelf options and, in case you prefer not to registry-shop (we know some people hate this), you can at least see what types of things work for us.
For those who would consider buying from the registry, this is a list we will update periodically with items we would really love to have, our little running wish-list. Any clothes we receive from this list will be in high rotation and, despite being all-too-quickly outgrown, will take a special place forever in Elliott’s babyhood photographs! You’ll notice a few rather pricey items on here as well, and so we’ve placed a few dream items on here, that while we can’t afford to spring for, we figured maybe a few people would like to team up to help make part of Elliott’s childhood. We don’t assume the expensive stuff would ever be gifted by one person!
For those of you averse to registries, but who just want a bit more guidance on gift-giving, let us say first, we really do mean it when we say, we don’t want gifts!!! We have a very small home, and really are devoted to a minimalist home, and setting a non-materialistic example for Elliott. But we do understand that people are going to occasionally buy gifts, so let us provide a little guidance ahead of time…
We intend to pretty much exclusively dress Elliott in a palette of colors that we find tasteful (mustard yellow, olive green, sage green, pumpkin orange, brick red, forest green, and other soft earth tones), in styles that are gender-neutral and conducive to play, and lacking any bold graphic elements. We’ll be sticking, as much as possible, to organic fibers and nontoxic materials. This means that, especially during the put-everything-in-her-mouth phase, we won’t be exposing her to plastic toys of any kind. Because we believe in the motto, “active toys = passive children / passive toys = active children & imagination”, we will also be exposing her to a very limited range of toys. We’ll be sticking to simple, open-ended toys that can be played with in many ways (we’re pretty much following the Waldorf philosophy – read more here).
Finally, if you absolutely want to give something to Elliott, but want to respect our no-gifts wish, we will also be contributing to a college savings account, and though it’s not exciting like seeing your gifts show up in photos, we certainly can’t exaggerate the value of her college fund, and welcome contributions!
